How does the field dependency option work in Timetonic?
This feature allows you to identify all the places where your column is attached.
It could be a view, an automation, a formula, a linked column and much more.
Let's look at this together.
This option will be particularly useful for analysing the impact of a change.
Understand why a field cannot be changed and quickly navigate to what it is using.
To access it, it's very simple.
You are in one of your tables, you click on the menu to open the editing of your column parameters and you will now find an icon, see field dependencies.
Here is the global view of the dependencies window.
On level 1, you will find the name of your workspace.
Then, a counter giving you the information of how many dependents are linked to this column.
At level 2, you will discover the number of tables that will be dependent on your column.
You open a table And then you discover all the dependencies that will be attached in the table.
In the view of tables, you can navigate by clicking on the icon at the end of the table name to access directly in the concerned table or open the tab to discover all the dependencies that are attached in your table.
A number appears at the end of each table name.
This corresponds to the number of dependencies attached in the table.
Each type of dependency within a table is represented by an icon.
You have dependencies related to automations, related to sorts, related to a filter, related to a view, related to formulas.
If you open the item, you can directly Access a secondary level, you can open the view dependencies, and there you will discover all the views to which the column is attached in the settings.
If you wish to directly access the settings elements from the Timeline view, just click on the gear icon, and you directly access the settings window of the Timeline view.
The same applies for all types of dependencies.
You open the automation dependency type, you discover all the automations that will be linked to the column in question, and you click on the gear to directly access the automation view.
To help you identify it, the automation flashes in highlight.
conditional text columns, linked tables columns,
You can also find a global access to field dependency.
In the table and view menu, organise the columns.
An icon here that allows to access the dependency window of this column.
This allows you to have a global access to your field dependencies quickly.
Field dependency secures your workspace by blocking the deletion of a column.
If a field is used elsewhere and you want to delete it, Timetonic blocks the ability to delete this column by giving you an alert message with visibility on all the field dependencies to which this column is attached.
You would have to delete all the dependencies attached to this column in order to then delete it.
It is interesting to know that the recalculation of the field independence window is performed each time the window is opened or each time you attempt to delete a field.
The displayed information therefore reflects all types of field dependency that you see present in your window.
As you have understood, the Field Dependency option in Timetonic is a key tool to maintain the consistency of your settings.
and prevent accidental field deletion in your workspace.
If you haven't done so already, we invite you to discover it quickly!
